1. Hey, Kindly introduce yourself..
1.- I’m Michael Rumbi, a versatile artist hailing from Kenya and currently rooted in South Africa. I wear different hats in the music realm—I’m a songwriter, producer (known as theNairobiNomad), and one half of the creative duo Basic City.
2. How long have you been doing music?
2.- I’ve been immersed in the music scene for about 7 years. My musical voyage began with the music collective Rozzi@Work, which I co-founded. In 2017, I ventured solo after my move to South Africa.
3. When did you discover your passion for music?
3.- The love affair with music sparked around 2009/2010 when I started exploring my own musical tastes. It was an organic connection that just clicked.
4. Who do you look up to for inspiration and musical influence and whats your music genre?
4.- Currently, I draw inspiration more from sounds than specific artists. My method involves pinpointing the vibe I want, finding chords that resonate, and immersing myself in playlists of the chosen genre. Musical influences encompass names like Lianne la Havas, Frank Ocean, Uyama Hiroto, Jordan Rakei, along with a penchant for jazz and indie sounds.
5. How has your journey been so far as a kenyan artist based in south africa?
5.- The journey as a Kenyan artist in South Africa has been a mix of highs and lows. While structural challenges exist due to being a foreign national, the music community warmly embraced me. Language barriers aside, people appreciate the Swahili touch in my music.
6. Tell us a little about your latest music project..
6.- “Groove Mosaic” is a fusion of Afro-sounds and neo-soul—a challenge turned into a collection of 5 tracks featuring artists from across Sub-Sahara. It’s a sonic journey, creating chilled vibes perfect for sunsets.
7. What can fans expect from you in the coming year?
7.Brace yourselves for 6 EPs dropping next year, each exploring a different genre. The musical diversity kicks off at the end of January with a single that promises to be enchanting. Excitement levels are high!
8. What do you hope to achieve through or in your music career this year?
8.- The plan involves expanding my performance venues, both nationally and internationally. Additionally, I aim to grow my listener base and introduce some merch.
